The Basics of Disposable Diapers: How to Choose a Disposable Diaper

If this is your first baby, chances are that you know nothing about diapers. Relax and try not to confuse yourself!  It is very simple – You only need to know the estimate weight of your baby to buy the right diaper size. To start off you can buy a big box of size N (for newborns who are 6 lbs but less than 10 lbs), or size 1 (if you anticipate that you will give birth to an 8-lb baby).

The next question is how many diapers to get? The price per diaper is cheaper when you get the biggest box, however, you may not be able to use all of it. The table below will help you determine how many diapers you need to purchase. Do keep in mind that your newborn will gain weight at an average of 1 ½ – 2 lbs per month for the first five months.

SIZES P N 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
WEIGHT (LBS) <6 <10 8-14 12-18 16-28 22-37 >27 >35 >41

There are also several brands of diapers you can choose from. The two most common brands are Huggies and Pampers. I personally prefer the Pampers brand, even if it is more expensive. This is because I found the Huggies brand to leak more often. There are three versions of Pampers diapers that a new parent may find useful to know:

This diaper will hold the most liquid, the baby can stay dry for up to 12 hours at night You may need to change every 3 hours as this diaper will not hold as much liquid as the Baby Dry and Cruisers This diaper can hold as much liquid as the Baby Dry and is as cloth-like as the Swaddlers but cost more
It’s the least cloth-like, the other two are considerably softer to touch It’s cloth-like and soft which is more comfortable for the baby It has liquid channels so it does not sag as much when full
Recommended for babies to wear at night due to higher liquid capacity Babies can wear this during the day if you prefer the softness of the Swaddlers Recommended for babies who are starting to crawl due to having the best fit

Baby Wipes

Of course, we will not forget the baby wipes! This is what you use to wipe the baby after a bowel movement. I strongly recommend Pampers Natural Clean Baby Wipes (water is always best though). The other brands and kinds gave my babies rashes. Using the right baby wipes and changing the diaper as soon as it is needed (when diaper is full or soiled) will ensure a rash-free baby bum.
